Unions are OK for men, but what have they ever done for women?
It's not true that unions are just for men. Women have always been an important part of trade unions. This is especially true of Usdaw. Over 60 percent of its members are women so Usdaw is particularly concerned to defend, improve and promote the interests of all women.
Usdaw has a Women's Officer at Central Office and a Women's Committee in each of its seven divisions. It campaigns on all sorts of issues that are important to women - equal pay, sexual harassment, cancer screening and maternity rights.
Usdaw's Education Department runs courses just for women, not just for the women who act as branch officers, committee members, shop stewards, etc, but also for any women members who might just want to know a little bit more about the union and what it is doing.
